A Cultural Landmark by the River
The Key Theatre has been at the heart of Peterborough’s cultural life since it first opened its doors in 1973. Originally created by converting a former Victorian-built municipal building on the banks of the River Nene, it quickly established itself as a vital creative hub for the region.
Over the decades, the Key has welcomed thousands of audiences to its varied programme of drama, music, comedy, and community events. It became known not just for receiving touring productions, but also for producing much-loved in-house shows and the city’s annual family pantomime.

Following a major refurbishment in 2010, the venue expanded to include a modern 94-seat studio theatre alongside its original 360-seat main auditorium. The glass-fronted design and riverside location make it one of Peterborough’s most distinctive venues.
Today, The Key Theatre continues to champion local talent while bringing world-class entertainment to the city, maintaining its role as a vibrant and inclusive space for all.
